PROTECTED – SEMI-ANILINE – TOP GRAIN LEATHER
During the tanning process of semi-aniline dyed protected leather, a pigment coat is lightly sprayed or rolled onto the hide surface. The coating is very light and is generally just enough to produce a uniform surface color. The added color pigment helps to control shade variations from hide to hide and provides a greater degree of protection from fading from sunlight. Finally, a thin top coat in either a gloss or matte finish is applied as a protective coating to help resist scratches or stains. Therefore, these leathers are called protected top-grain leather and will include both full-grain leather and corrected corrected-grain leathers.
Full-Grain Leather Characteristics
In a world of manmade materials, real leather is a natural product like gemstones, exotic woods or any other natural material, hides vary in beauty and integrity. All manners of influences can affect their look and texture – genetics, environment and handling of the hide. Over its life, every hide acquires a personality. The inevitable accumulation of wrinkles and stretch marks, healed scars from run-ins with barbed wire, encounters with insects, thorns, and branding irons leave “nature’s beauty marks”. All of these events combine to give each genuine hide a distinctive character and are not considered defects, imperfections or flaws.
Within this Protected Top Grain category – you will find leather patterns that are Full-Grain leathers – meaning that the surface grain has not been altered or corrected and will display the natural beauty of the leather which may include range marks such as brands, healed scars from run ins with other animals, healed scars from barb wire fences, insect bites, grain variation such as fat wrinkles, etc. These beauty marks are not defects but examples of real leather, that you are selecting a leather that has not had its skin altered or changed or corrected.
Within this Protected Top Grain category – you will find leather patterns that are Corrected Grain leathers – This is the most prominent type of top-grain leather in today’s marketplace and perfect for the active family with children and pets. There are distinct differences that separate corrected grain leather from full-grain leather. Full-grain leather, meaning that no alterations have been made to the grain or surface of the leather. Corrected grain leather, as their name implies, have had the surface altered. These hides are slightly grain corrected with light buffing or sanding, and then lightly embossed with a grain giving the surface a more uniform grain. They are then dyed with color pigments providing color uniformity, followed by a finishing protective top coat that resists scratches, stains and fading from sunlight.

* Due to the way these leathers are tanned, variation in color is to be expected therefore, a cutting from the actual cowhides that will be used on your furniture will be sent to you for final approval. Please allow additional time for this activity to happen. Additionally, some leathers such as the Document leather pattern groups are hand rubbed/applied therefore, expect longer lead times than normal with variation expected.
