Leather Color Selections from Comfort Design

All of our furniture pieces are covered entirely in your choice of the following premium quality 100% top grain leathers. Less durable and less costly types of leather are not used on our furniture, such as faux leather, splits, bonded, or bicast leather. Price is based upon Grade selected and Grades are noted G1 (least cost Grade 1) through G10. All leather hides are of the same premium quality, the difference in price is due to the effort done by the tannery to create a specific look or feel such as 2-tone, 3-tones of color or antique or manuscript appearance. The cost of the extra effort by the tannery generates the higher grade leather cost. Below the colors are more leather descriptions.

If you desire you may choose to have a contrasting leather welt on your furniture, or even contrasting leathers on the inside versus the outside, or on the seat versus the rest of the furniture. There is an additional charge for this customization.

Leather Characteristics

In a world of manmade materials, real leather is a natural product like gemstones, exotic woods or any other natural material, hides vary in beauty and integrity. All manners of influences can affect their look and texture - genetics, environment and handling of the hide. Over its life, every hide acquires a personality. The inevitable accumulation of wrinkles and stretch marks, run-ins with barbed wire, healed scars, encounters with insects, thorns and branding irons leave "beauty" marks. All of these events combine to give each genuine hide a distinctive character and are not considered flaws.

Leather Types

Corrected Aniline Leathers
This top grain leather has had its natural full grain slightly buffed off and replaced with an embossed grain. This corrected grain process removes most natural range marks, scars, insect bites and scratches and provides a more consistent uniform grain appearance. After the leather is aniline dyed, a thin coat of color pigment is applied providing a more uniform color appearance. Next, a light protective finish coat is applied to provide resistance to scratches, stains, and fading from sunlight, all without altering its natural softness.

Protected Aniline Leathers
This top grain leather maintains its natural full grain and has minimal marks, scars and scratches. After the leather is aniline dyed, a thin coat of color pigment is applied providing a more uniform color appearance. Next, a light protective finish coat is applied to provide resistance to scratches, stains and fading from sunlight, all without altering its natural softness.

Slightly Protected Aniline Leathers
This top grain, natural full grain leather has minimal marks, scars and scratches. After the leather is aniline dyed, a thin coat of color pigment is applied providing a more uniform color appearance. Protection against scratches, stains and fade resistance is limited on these hides.

Pull-Up Aniline Leathers
Pull-up leathers are aniline dyed hides that have a waxed or oil base pull-up finish that creates a subtle color burst and highlights when the leather is stretched or pulled around corners. These top grain, full grain hides include all the natural markings to create a warm, worn or rustic look. Protection is very limited on these hides.

No Protection - Natural - Full - Aniline Leather
These cow hides have the least amount of natural blemishes. They are tanned to be buttery soft with natural scars and markings still visible. These hides will show variation, because different parts of the hides absorb the dye differently. In some cases these top grain, full grain hides are cut thicker and shrunk to enhance the grain, creating an extremely rich hand or feel.

Leather Color Pattern Descriptions

ASPEN - protected - Aspen is a medium weight hide that has been grain corrected in order to reduce surface imperfections. It has been embossed and tumbled to achieve a pronounced pebble grain effect. A special kela roller applies the "two-tone" effect that gives each hide its own distinct look and coloration. Aspen is a terrific grade article that resembles a much higher grade vegetable-tanned type of leather.

BRIGHTON - not protection - A beautiful, naturally milled grain and saturated color palette make Brighton the perfect choice for a soft, authentic leather. Tanned with a special agent that imparts it with a supple and polished feel, this leather exudes subtle elegance an luxury. Its overall appearance is marked by a refined patina similar to a well-worn pair of equestrian chaps. Hides originate from the United Kingdom and are a heavier weight.

BROMPTON - no protection - Brompton is a full grain leather made on the best selection of North American raw material. The use of hot waxes produces a deep luxurious surface color with a distinct pull-up effect that blends with the under tone color to create a traditional high end burst. The hides are tanned purposely tight and the heat process compacts the grain further to replicate a veg tanned leather but with more drapability that expands its application possibilities. Brompton is produced to wear into your life much like a baseball glove. With use, a rich patina will develop and the waxes will soften without stretching.

CAMBRIDGE - protected - This vintage nubuck is a product of South American hides that are aniline dyed and hand antiqued using three colors to create the multi-tone effect of Cambridge. The hides are then hand sanded to distress the hides to produce an aged old-world effect which highlights all of the natural markings. These natural markings prove the leather's authenticity as Nature's autograph. Finally the hides are tumbled to produce its exquisitely soft hand and remarkable drape ability. Periodic dusting and vacuuming is recommended for normal maintenance. Blot spills as quickly as possible and let the area air dry. If a spill is absorbed, it will dissipate with time or migrate into the leather and become muted over time and contribute to creating its own unique character and rich patina.

CASAMARI - protected - is a leather that has a wonderful visual depth that exudes a deep richness, while also possessing a very soft, sexy hand or feel. CHESTERFIELD - protected - Chesterfield is a medium weight, corrected grain semi-aniline leather. A fine print is then applied to help every hide develop into a dry drum beautiful uniform natural grain. The unique tow-tone aniline kela effect gives this leather its distinctive look and character.

DURANGO - protected - Design, Durability... Durango! Durango is the best of both worlds for today's consumer - soft and supple leather with a protection and clean ability story. DREAMER - protected - Dreamer is created from top grain bovine hides, lightly grain corrected to create a consistent surface while maintaining the beautiful esthetics of full grain leather. The extended milling process accentuates the natural grain and compliments its softness and drape ability. The unique finish provides increased durability enabling Dreamer's flexibility in a variety of lifestyles, while maintaining the luxurious soft touch of aniline leather. The natural features and distinctive grain which validate the authenticity of a fine leather may vary from hide to hide and within a hide. Periodic dusting and vacuuming is recommended for normal maintenance. Blot spills as quickly as possible and let the area air dry.

This full grain article has lurking just below its "cover" a very alluring and appealing surprise... a tri-tone color combination that evokes a sense of prestige and history. The visual image created by the hand crafted on-the-furniture rub-off technique is normally only achieved through years of use and enjoyment.

This full grain leather has a subtle hand rubbed effect applied by skilled artisans in the US. Legacy has a traditional, aged look coupled with a luxurious and soft touch that is finished with a protective top coat. Because of the top coat, spills will bead up for a time, so they should be blotted quickly and left to air dry. If a spill is absorbed, it will either dissipate over time as human skin will absorb and eventually diffuse stains. Or the spill will migrate into the leather and become muted over time and add a unique character and rich patina to the piece.

LIBERTY - not protected - Liberty is a full top grain leather with a natural grain and a pull-up effect that creates a beautiful aged look when upholstered. The hides get their pull-up effect from oils and waxes that are applied during the finishing process. When the leather is stretched, the oils and waxes are displaced, which causes the stretched area to become lighter in color and render a naturally aged look. Since Liberty is a full grain, the surface of the hide has not been altered so all of nature's markings such as healed scars and neck and belly wrinkles, will be evident and should be considered as part of the natural beauty of a genuine leather product.

OUTSIDER - protected - is a standard weight corrected grain article produced from premium Brazilian raw material. The unique tannage of Outsider provides a luxurious drape and suppleness of hand highlighted by a new kela (two-tone) design effect. A light clear coat application to the surface enhances the endurance of this lightly finished leather.

Pony is the essence of "natural" leather as this clear, wax finish reveals all the inherent features of full grain leather and highlights the rich, natural shade toning throughout the hide. This leather provides a beautiful patina over time as wear actually enhances its look and appeal. It is a very low maintenance leather. Use a dry cloth to remove residual dust and remove ordinary dirt and smudges with just a lightly dampened cloth, otherwise, leave it alone.

RAVENWOOD - protected - Ravenwood is a true throwback to the old 1920's and 30's vegetable tanned leathers that were prevalent in the leather suitcase and handbag industries. It blends the vegetable tanning techniques of the past with today's modern technology to achieve the look and feel of yesteryear. Ravenwood is a full grain leather made of European raw material. A specially made kela roller applies the "two-tone" effect that gives each hide its own distinct look and coloration. Finally the hides are milled (the process of tumbling the hides in a large drum) to reach the soft yet full and plum hand/feel.

REGAL - protected - Aniline dyes are hand applied to South American raw material to impart a transparent clarity. This couple with a heavy substrate gives the leather a sophisticated, pebble grain appearance. The hides are hand rubbed in North Carolina by skilled craftsmen with years of experience. Because of the depth in transparency of this leather, natural markings should not be considered defects. Hides are completed with a transparent top coat for a buttery soft hand and protection for stain resistance.

RUCKER - light protection - Rucker is a natural, full grain leather that presents an extremely sophisticated look with its premium characteristics on superior German and New Zealand hides tanned in Italy. The large, clean hides are vacuum dried and double ironed. A touch of oil highlights the burnished effect and a slight wax top coat is added to provide a pleasing touch and hint of subtle pull. Shade variation within the hide is to be expected.

STEAMBOAT - protected - Steamboat is a corrected grain leather with a unique wax finish. Due to the infusion of waxes in the finishing process, the leather will lighten up at natural stress points when upholstered. These areas will only serve to highlight the intrinsic beauty of this article.

SWAIN- protected - Swain is a medium weight leather that is lightly buffed to reduce surface imperfections. It has a subtle two-tone effect that is applied with a special roller to enhance the visual depth of the leather. The hides are then tumbled in wooden drums which creates the more pebble grain effect on the surface and renders the perfect combination of beauty and practicality.

TORONTO - protected - Toronto is a corrected, top-grain leather with a unique finish of aniline dyes combined with an infusion of waxes. The hides are from the top selection of South American raw material and are lightly corrected to reduce surface imperfections. They are aniline dyed and given a durable yet soft finished top coat. The mottled, two-tone effect of Vintage is created by the hides first going through a special spray machine and then being tumbled in a wooden drying drum.
